Why a LUNAR LODGE?
Our Lodge is a Lunar Lodge; from ancient times Masonic Lodges used to organize their meeting nights to coincide with the phase of the Full Moon. This had a lot to do with the fact that transportation was extremely poor in those days and getting from home to the Lodge and back again was often troublesome. Having the Lodge meetings on the night of a Full Moon was a practical solution to ensure that the Masons travelling to and from their Lodge would have the advantage of the bright Moon, to aid them navigate in safety along the rough country roads and footpaths. Nowadays navigation is much easier, usually by car on well-lit roads, so, many Lodges opt to meet on fixed dates throughout the year instead of meeting by the Lunar calendar.
However, being an incredibly old Lodge,
years old, founded in 1791, we still practice and maintain original traditions and met on or as near to the Full Moon as possible.
