Alan's gone OTT
Dateline: 7th July 2018

The venue

Peel Tower stands on the edge of the plateau above Holcombe Village. It commemorates the famous Conservative politician Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), who was born in Bury.

The tower is 128 feet (39 metres) high and stands beside an enormous pit from where the stone was dug to build it. It was closed in 1947 and did not reopen until 1985. When it is open, a flag is flown from the flagpole, and visitors can climb the stairs to the balcony at the first level and to the observation platform at the top. The views from the top are magnificent and on a clear day you can see the Isle of Man and the mountains of Wales. The tower is floodlit during the evenings.

The Challenge

The Challenge was to Abseil down the 128ft Peel Tower to raise money for the ELMC and other charitable causes related to young people. However, before you can abseil down you will need to ascend the 171 steps inside the Tower to get to the top, a challenge on its own you may say, (no lift). From our Lodge, WBro Alan Fielder had taken on the challenge despite having had a knee operation earlier in the year.. Please support him and give generously when considering sponsorship.

Over he goes, just getting settled and finding his footing.
So far, so good. Is there far to go, and who cleans these windows?
Oops, just readjusting or just showing off.
Back on the ground with his Son Daniel who came along to support his Dad and keep him out of trouble, (trouble, what trouble?).

When interviewed after the abseil, WBro Fielder commented:

"On Saturday 7th of July, we went over the top, large, small, slim and not so slim, unsure of where I fitted in there, but they wanted me to go down first to test the rope.
The day was nice and sunny, and the paramedics and undertakers took their places, but all went well .... so, no trade today.
A big thank you to the members of our Lodge, who turned out to support me, and to those who were there in spirit.
A princely sum of £600.00 was raised for our charities and a big thanks to the generous souls who donated."

* A Certificate of Pride *
A big well-done to Alan and to all those taking part,
your courage is much appreciated
